Hood Of Your Car: A Poem

3/30/2023

I feel like sharing another piece of poetry. This one has a line in it that has become the working title for my future poetry book way down the road. I was writing this poem and that one line came out of nowhere and it defined the areas and the atmosphere of which I’m sharing experience wise in poems I’ve been writing since last year.

If you read ‘Hood Of Your Car,’ thank you.

Hood Of Your Car

Waited for you in the early hours

All dressed in my summer best
Sent a text, I replied “can’t wait to see you”
Inside emotions ran wild
Your car turned the corner
Calmed everything down
Sitting inside smiling, I winked
Just the way you like

“I have the perfect place,” you promised
My wide-eyed thoughts showing through
The further out we got
everything seemed perfect—peace, beauty and freedom
Parking on a dirt opening
the distance
was so worth it

Wearing your worn out black cap backwards so you can kiss me
You tell me I’m pretty
And you never expected any of this—especially with me

Leaning on the hood of your car
You’re standing in front of me
Summer breeze brushing my hair
Sweat highlighting your face
You’re smiling, mesmerized
Quickly turn my head to stare into the field
So you couldn’t see
Just how in love I am
Leaning on the hood of your car

the boarder in-between a small town and a city so glamorous
Your arms wrapped around my waist
“Let’s get out of here”, your lips softly spoke.
I can’t—my family my friends, I’d miss them
The silence…
It was pure—a moment unfolding
No ending insight unlike our daylight

Wearing your worn out black cap backwards so you can kiss me
Thought this would be my future
How naive of me
You were dealing with your own fight
But never took it out on me
So sweet—our perfection

Leaning on the hood of your car
You’re standing in front of me
Summer breeze brushing my hair
Sweat highlighting your face
You’re smiling, mesmerized
Quickly turn my head to stare into the field
So you couldn’t see
Just how in love I am
Leaning on the hood of your car

And even though I knew
I knew this would be the last of you
The last of this
I couldn’t resist your kiss
Leaving me…
Pretty but heartbroken.

Wearing your worn out black cap backwards so you can kiss me, goodbye.
